Requirements for PALS Birth Doula Certification

Please note that these requirements are meant to give general information.  The certification packet available for purchase has thorough explanations for all requirements.  Please contact the PALS office for more info about requirements or to purchase a packet.

    1. Current PALS membership.

    2. Pay your $35 Certification Application Fee.

    3. Read six books from the PALS Reading List.

    4. Attend a Labor Support Course of 14 or more hours - *You must complete the requirements for PALS certification and present your Certification Packet within 4 years from the completion of your Labor Support Course.

    5. Submit a total of six (6) good evaluations from Clients and Care Providers.

    6. Submit two professional or peer recommendations from a PALS or DONA Certified Doula, Childbirth Educator, Midwife, OB, or RN.

    7. Submit documentation of participation and evaluation from one of the following:
       
      A) Pathways to Births
      Program

      B) Certification Interview


    8. Attend 3 Births as the Primary Doula and submit Self-Assessments for each:

      a) Self-Assessments must be from births attended after completing Labor Support Course.

      b) You must be in attendance at these births in the role of a Primary doula (If you are using a birth from the PALS Precepted Program or UWMC Doula Care you must have been an active participant and include an evaluation from the program).

      c) You must be present for a minimum of 15 hours TOTAL, FOR ALL THREE BIRTHS.

      d) Two of the three births must be vaginal births.

      e) An elective/scheduled cesarean birth may count for only one of the three births and must include the following documentation:

      • Your presence with the woman/couple before and during the cesarean.
      • Immediate postpartum support.
      • Follow-up postpartum contact.

      f) You must document a minimum of four (4) prenatal hours total, for all three births.

      g) You must document a minimum of four (4) postpartum hours total, for all three births. 

      h) Letters or birth stories written to the mother or partner/father of the child will NOT be accepted for certification purposes. 

      i) Please use the Birth Skills Checklist included in your packet to ensure that you have included documentation of essential skills required for our certification process.

    9. Complete two (2) PALS Data Collection Forms for each of the three births documented in the Self-Assessments.

    10. Submit a one-page essay describing the purpose and value of labor support, your goals as a doula and your anticipated participation with PALS.

    11. Submit documentation of 4 hours of Continuing Education in Maternal-Child Health.  This may include (but is not limited to) attendance at one or more of the following:

      • PALS Continuing Education Meetings or Advanced Doula Trainings
      • Meetings of birth related organizations where there is an educational component
      • Other conferences, workshops or meetings related to Maternal-Child Health
      • Childbirth Preparation Series (not as an expectant parent)
      • Videos/DVDs that contain lectures or seminars in Maternal-Child Health

    12. Sign the bottom of the Application for PALS Birth Doula Certification form acknowledging your agreement to abide by the PALS Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

  • Scholarships may be available through Open Arms Perinatal Services.  Contact OAPS at (206) 723-6868.

  • If you are already a Certified Doula with another organization, please email info@pals-doulas.org or call (206)-329-PALS for information on our cooperative certification options.

  • If your packet will expire or has expired, you may request a one-time, six-month extension added onto the original date by sending a letter and including a $10 fee to PALS.  After the six-month extension, if you do not complete the process, you will be required to purchase another certification packet.   It is suggested that you purchase your packet before attending births used for certification.

  • You must complete your certification requirements within four years of attending a Labor Support Course.  A one-time, six-month extension might be possible.  Send a letter to PALS with your request.

Special arrangements will be made for those candidates who cannot complete the PALS packet due to language barriers or other factors.  These arrangements will be at the discretion of the PALS Certification Program and may include but are not limited to: In-person interview, interviews with clients or care providers, and/or alternate forms of documentation.
